Summer may seem like the time to go outside and Lina Romaydo things, but let's be real: it's time to sit indoors and watch TV. Networks generally try to keep things fun and light for their summer premieres, and these seven shows will have something fun for every type of person out there.
SEE ALSO: Summer movie preview: What to watch if you only have time for five films this summerThe TV branch of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe gains two new heroes this summer Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen are two teens with the kind of superpowers audience haven’t yet seen from the MCU.
Ty can envelop people in a dimension of pure fear and darkness, and Tandy can create daggers of pure light that have adverse effects on people who come in contact with them. This Freeform show places the teen heroes in New Orleans instead of New York, and already has some tenuous connections to the extant MCU (peep that Roxxon sign in the trailer).
Because the heat death of the universe will occur before Ryan Murphy takes a vacation, the television mastermind behind American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Glee, Scream Queens, and seriously so many other shows will premiere his latest project this June.
Poseis a look into the origins of voguing in the ballroom scene at the end of the 1980s and will feature television’s largest cast of transgender actors ever. The dance numbers are Moulin Rouge-level elaborate, the costumes are amazing, and the overarching theme of finding family within a marginalized community is nothing short of beautiful.
The first minute of the Dietlandtrailer makes the show seem like the semi-generic story of a woman who ghostwrites advice columns for a perfect-looking editor-in-chief of a major women’s publication...and then the murder part happens. Dietlandis based on a book by Sarai Walker and is extremely ballsy about its twist conceit, which involves murdering a lot of men accused of sex crimes.
It’s the kind of perfectly timed satire that’s going to dominate The Discourse this summer, so it’s important to stay caught up.
Stephen King’s body of work is so large no one would be surprised if he turned out to be several smaller, very talented people trapped in a secret room hidden behind a trick bookshelf. But that’s simply not true, and Castle Rockon Hulu promises to be a well realized encapsulation of King’s massive canon.
Set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, which is mentioned in many of King’s allegedly unrelated stories, the show will weave together the many tales that surround the cursed town to tell a narrative that is sure to surprise and terrify its viewers. Oh, and Moonlight’s André Holland stars in it.
Reverielooks like what happens when you take the concept of Inceptionand throw it in a blender with the visuals from Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, then top it off with a cop. In the show, a former hostage negotiator’s new job involves wrenching people trapped in their own memories back into the real world, and it looks like it’s going to be this year’s fun twist on the ordinary “Cop With X Now Has To Y” television formula.
Strange Angeltells the true story of Jack Parsons, an engineer who founded the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and helped to usher in the age of modern rocket science. He also joined a cult and attempted to ritualistically summon a goddess called Babalon, had an affair with his wife’s sister who ended up leaving him for the father of Scientology, and was accused of spying on the United States. He certainly lived a life.
As the trailer suggests, anyone tuning into Strange Angel should expect “a tale of rocket science and sex.” Sounds great, TBH.
While 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruitmovie starring Chris Pine did just OK at the box office, Tom Clancy’s CIA spy guy returns this summer in Jack Ryan, an Amazon show starring buff John Krasinski. It’s a big move for Amazon to take a character who’s starred in five blockbuster movies (including 1990’s The Hunt for Red October) to the small screen, but what’s summer TV without an action-oriented series where a lot of stuff blows up and someone with a fantastic abdomen does awesome stunts?
