When Tesla announced its acquisition plans for SolarCity in August,Delires obscenes (1998) Elon Musk's strategy for the two companies included providing solar roofs to customers that integrate with Tesla's Powerwall home batteries. These would ultimately power not only the user's home, but also her electric car.
In a tweet on Thursday, Musk said Tesla was planning to launch the product in October. While the date is not set in stone -- Musk says the company is "aiming for" an Oct. 28 unveiling -- the fact he's throwing dates around means nearly everything's in position for the launch.

Musk had previously explained that, compared with some existing solutions out there, the Tesla/SolarCity solar roof was not a "thing of the roof. It is the roof," adding that customers would be "really excited" about the product. As for Powerwall 2.0 -- the second iteration of Tesla's home battery module -- it was originally announced for this summer, but has yet to be unveiled.
In the Twitter discussion that ensued, SolarCity answered some questions from users. The company said it's looking into making the new product available as a retrofit for early SolarCity adapters, but it didn't have an announcement at this time.
@eddiemoy718 Hi Eddy. We are working to make it available to existing customers as a retrofit in the future. We hope this information helps.

The solar roof/home battery/car charger combo is an important product for Tesla and Musk, who mentioned it was one of the crucial milestones in his "master plan" in July. Back then, he described it as a "smoothly integrated and beautiful solar-roof-with-battery product that just works." The short version of that plan, as laid out by Musk, is as follows:
Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storageExpand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segmentsDevelop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learningEnable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it
The last few months have been an extremely busy period for Musk and the companies he helms, Tesla and SpaceX. Following several accidents -- one resulting in a driver's death -- that occurred while the company's autopilot system was engaged, Tesla has launched a big software update for its cars, with new navigation and improvements to autopilot.
On the SpaceX side of things, the cause of a costly explosion of one of the company's Falcon 9 rockets in September is still being determined. Meanwhile, Musk is about to give a speech on Tuesday at the International Astronautical Conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he is expected to lay out SpaceX's plans for the colonization of Mars.
