The Los Angeles Timesreported that the FBI had been informed of "a child welfare incident" involving Pitt. According to the site's anonymous source, the allegation involved "unruly behaviour" by the actor with his child present.
An LAPD spokesperson told Fox News that the case had been referred to the FBI because the alleged incident took place on a plane. The National Transportation Safety Board explains on its website that in aviation incidents involving suspected criminal activity other agencies may be involved in the investigation.
It comes after representatives for the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services told Mashablethat due to confidentiality, they could not confirm or deny an investigation into alleged child abuse against Pitt, as per their standard policy.
Earlier, LAPD denied claims that its detectives were investigating the allegations.
According to TMZ, the alleged incident took place Sept. 14 on a private jet.
Citing anonymous sources, the site writes, "Brad, Angelina and their kids were on a flight last Wednesday when he allegedly got wasted on the private jet. He allegedly went wild, screaming and getting physical with the kids."
Someone anonymously reported what happened, triggering an investigation.
Jolie separated from Pitt the day following the alleged incident and filed for divorce a few days later.
The actress has filed for sole custody of the couple's six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8. In court documents filed Monday, Jolie cited irreconcilable differences in ending their marriage of two years.
